What's your stand on the death penalty? The Texas After Violence Project is not an advocacy organization in the most commonly understood sense of the term. It does not take positions on policies, regulations, statutes, or court cases. It does not lobby. The project advocates people telling their stories, speaking their truths, sharing their life experiences. The project advocates people listening to other people. A guiding principle of our organization is that if people listen to one another's personal life experiences, people will feel greater connection with and empathy toward each other, and they will come to understand each other more deeply. Mutual understanding and respectful conversations will give rise to ideas about how to more effectively, compassionately, and justly prevent violence and respond to it when it does occur. Some of the individuals involved in this project have worked against the death penalty in one way or another, or do conduct such work apart from their work at TAVP. But that's not why THIS organization exists. This organization exists so that we can encourage people to tell their stories and listen to each other. |
