Walter WilliamsWalter Williams grew up in San Antonio, Texas. So did Joan Cheever, a journalist with a law degree who assisted in Williams' final appeals, and who witnessed his execution. Williams' execution haunted Cheever, who tried to imagine what Williams' life might look like if he were given a second chance. Cheever sought answers in the lives of the 587 men and 2 women who she calls the "Class of 1972," people on death rows who were released when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty -- as then administered -- was unconstitutional. She summarized her findings in Back from the Dead: One woman's search for the men who walked off America's Death Row, Hoboken, N.J., John Wiley & Sons, 2006. |
