Narratives about education as a human right

Mr. Larry Daves, a civil rights lawyer, discusses Plyler v. Doe, in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1982 that all children in the U.S., regardless of immigration status, are entitled to a free public education. Mr. Daves filed a lawsuit, originally styled Doe v. Plyler, on behalf of undocumented immigrant children and their parents in Tyler, Texas, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Judge William Wayne Justice presiding (see video 3), Smith County.
Professor Al Kauffman, of St. Mary's Law School, former attorney for Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), discusses Edgewood v. Kirby, a lawsuit in which plaintiffs challenged the state system of school finane as unconstitutional under the Texas Constitution. Mr. Kauffman represented the plaintiffs. Bexar County
Ms. María Elena Martínez, shaman, healer, and arts advocate, former chair of La Raza Unida Party in Texas, later a bilingual education teacher and director of bilingual education in the Austin Independent School District, on bilingual education, Austin, Travis County
Judge F. Scott McCown, Executive Director of the Center for Public Policy Priorities, former state district judge in Travis County, Texas, discusses Edgewood v. Kirby, a lawsuit in which plaintiffs challenged the state system of school finance as unconstitutional under the Texas Constitution. Judge McCown presided over this case during part of its long history.
Mr. Rogelio Nuñez, director of Proyecto Libertad in Harlingen and founder of the Narciso Martínez Cultural Arts Center in San Benito, discusses the school that he and graduate school colleagues created for undocumented immigrant children in Austin during the period when Texas law prevented school districts from accepting these children except on a tuition-paying basis, Cameron County

We post interview transcripts only with the explicit permission of interview narrators, typically after they have reviewed the DVDs and transcripts of their interviews, requested changes, approved the final versions of transcripts, donated them to the project, and specifically authorized web publication.
