Ethical responsibilities to our funders- Use funds prudently - Observe restrictions that come with "public charity" status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and comply with other applicable laws - Use funds only for purposes for which they were donated Careful observers may note that project volunteers have undertaken a few additional human rights & social justice endeavors that are consistent with, but strictly speaking outside of, the original mission statement, if you were to limit "serious violence" to murder and executions. In order to harness the enthusiasm of volunteers, board, and staff for human rights work -- while not betraying our original mission or funders who donate funds specifically towards an arguably narrower mission -- we do not spend paid staff time on projects that are not related to crimes, criminal law or procedure, incarceration or execution, and we do not spend TAVP resources on such endeavors. Much of the equipment and furnishings that we use at the TAVP office belong to volunteers and staff. No paid member works full time for the project; some staff members have chosen part-time positions specifically so that they are free to pursue other social justice or creative work, or teaching, that organically emerge from work with TAVP. |
