Benjamin Kuipers

Benjamin Kuipers, Secretary of the Texas After Violence Project board, held an endowed Professorship in Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, until he moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan.

He received his B.A. from Swarthmore College, and his Ph.D. from MIT. He has held research or faculty appointments at MIT, Tufts University, and the University of Texas at Austin, where he served as Department Chairman. Professor Kuipers investigates the representation of commonsense and expert knowledge, with particular emphasis on the effective use of incomplete knowledge.

A full term for a member of the Texas After Violence Project is four years; however, the board also decided to stagger the terms of the initial board for the sake of continuity. Professor Kuipers drew a three-year term, 2007-2010, but resigned in September, 2009, because his commitments at the University of Michigan, and the distance between Ann Arbor and Austin, prevented his full participation in the project.

We greatly appreciate Professor Kuiper's important contributions at the earliest stages and wish him all the best.
